Ryan Reynolds to Play the 'mon with the Mouth in "Detective Pikachu"

"Deadpool" star and all-around weirdo beats out fan-fave Danny DeVito for title role.

Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds has been a teen heartthrob, multiple superheroes, and 2010's Sexiest Man Alive. And within sight of the Deadpool sequel, it's been announced that his next job will be far more animated -- taking on the voice and mo-cap role of Detective Pikachu.

The film is set to be released by Legendary, with a screenplay penned by Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls) and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy). Goosebumps and Captain Underpants director Rob Letterman will be at the helm.

Reynolds joins previously announced stars Justice Smith and Kathryn Newton. The Deadpool star apparently beat out Dwayne Johnson, Mark Wahlberg, and Hugh Jackman for the role. (And, if you count the 50,000 or so supporters of a certain Change.org petition, Danny DeVito.)

The Detective Pikachu character hails from his own game -- a Pikachu who is not as strong or fast as others of his species, but has a head for solving crimes and can be understood by humans.

Detective Pikachu will be released worldwide by Universal, except in Japan, where it will be released by Toho. Filming begins next month.
