Hope you weren't getting too excited about the prospect of playing a new Mega Man Legends game on Nintendo 3DS, as Capcom has officially pulled the plug on their Mega Man Legends 3 Project.
Capcom released this message regarding the cancelation of Mega Man Legends 3. Though it's tough to imagine, the corresponding FAQ denies that it has anything to do with the departure of Mega Man mastermind Keiji Inafune. After all, Capcom has always called Legends 3 a "Project," and, as they stated, "Unfortunately, it was not felt that the Mega Man Legends 3 Project met the required criteria."

Another theory is that Capcom is backing off of the title's development due to lackluster 3DS sales, which is something that happened most recently to Sega's Crush 3D. Whatever the cause, it would appear the furthest the game was fated to make it was the downloadable "Prototype Version" Capcom created to test the waters.
For the unfamiliar, the Mega Man Legends (Rockman DASH) series started on the original Playstation in 1997, marking the first 3D adventure for Capcom's squat hero. So far 2011 hasn't been a stellar year for poor Mega Man. Mega Man Universe—the online level-editing, character-swapping game—was canceled back in March.
